Summertime ‘06 - Vince Staples (Released in 2015)
Due to the fact that seemingly I’m one of very few people who isn’t amazed by this album, I decided to go more in depth with it and to review it. Also hoping that the album would finally impress me after about 10 listens total going back from many months ago. And after more re-listens and analysis, my opinion has not changed. Before I state the negatives of the album for me, I would like to say that the only songs I actually enjoyed were ‘Lift Me Up’, ‘Norf Norf’, ‘Summertime’, ‘Loca’ (somewhat), ‘3230’ and ‘C.N.B’. Now, the album started off amazing with very impressive lyrics by Vince. Specifically the first verse on ‘Lift Me Up’. He had many moments like that in this album, but overall this LP was just too inconsistent for me. Examples of negatives for me on this album include Vince’s lazy and Drake-ish flow on ‘Loca’. I mean I tried not to but that’s all I could think of when listening especially since Vince’s flow rubbed off lazy as I said. And it sucks because I really love the hook on that song. Another negative for me was how Vince’s flows did not match up well with some of the production. An example of that is the song ‘Birds & Bees’. I don’t know how to explain it but this production just didn’t fit well with a rapper like Vince. It was just uninteresting for me. And moments exactly like that were spread out all throughout the album. Another negative for me was how sloppy this album was in my eyes. There were moments where it came off too poppy like on the hook on ‘Might Be Wrong’ and songs that seemed out of place like ‘Señorita’. And despite the concept being creative, the album lacked a sense of unity for me. Overall I’ll finish it off here and to be honest I really wanted to like this album because even I can admit that Vince is creative and doing something unique makin music that doesn’t sound like anybody else’s. But again, to sum it up this album has not clicked for me and most likely never will. I’m practically done giving it chances after many listens. It’s safe to say that this album isn’t for me. Now watch this review get more clout than my last one smh.
