'Extinction of will'? The very opposite. My entire life has been a saga of survival, in which the will to live life to the full has seen me through periods of failure, disappointment, loneliness, even despair. I have often willed myself into doing things quietly and in my own way.
And as for 'withdrawal from all things of the senses'--no, never!
Can we drool at the cover for few seconds first? Yes, it's adorable!
With Love from Hills, a collection that is written like a diary, gives insight into the mind of the author and the observation he makes through his window.
He jots down his observations on modern-day obsession with technology, mocks the idea of homeschooling as he finds it will stunt the human interactive capabilities of a child. Bond doesn't like attending Lit Fests, he found Dubai an artificial city without history hence no soul. If left to his own devices he would walk the sabzi-mandi.
From there he jumps to a night of storm where he wakes up with a jolt. He speaks about the first book he ever read Big Book of Nursery Rhymes, he also pens about the scale of the immortality of Old Mother Hubbard, Three Blind Mice, Humpty Dumpty, Simple Simon etc stand. And how he asked his father about injuries of Jack and Jill.
He speaks of his days in the English Channel and importance of Dreams in his life, how his 'adventure wind' shaped him as a boy and how it influenced his grandson Rakesh too years later.
The constant companion in the narrative here is his red germaniums and changing weather. We battle through winter, spring and the sudden summer.
Though this collection has come from Scholastic, I think some themes at the end are for teenagers than young kids, but again I shouldn't complain I read Call of the Wild at age ten.
Reading Bond is a lovely experience always, but this collection was haphazardly put without any sense of typographical balance. With such a lovely cover we expect better bookmaking craft.
Happy Children’s Day to all Ruskin Bond Lovers! We grew up with the one of the best and Greatest writer of India.
