Fun Fact: I'm intensely afraid of open water. Ha! It's even sounds ridiculous writing out, but it's true! Me and open water are not friends. It has to do with the darkness below, as well as envisioning dead people floating up and eating me. Yup! Dead people. I am, however, a great swimmer. I actually completely an Ironman 70.3 once (2km swim). I had 18 heart attacks and filled my goggles with tears, but I was able to face my fear one time and live to tell the story.
The shit thing is that I allow fear to limit me. I avoid water sports like the plague. If I'm ever out there (like surfing in Australia), I need a very confident person with me, guiding me, and talking me out of the inevitable panic attack. For some reason, people find this hilarious, and I can honestly laugh about it too, but it's all very real to me.
Even more hilarious... I'm now obsessed with SUPing. It's an awesome workout, a great way to spend time outdoors and it allows me live on the edge of glory with my fear. This past weekend, I went adventuring with my good friend D. He took me out on a beautiful lake, on a windy and wavy kind of day. Because he is an animal at all things sports, he was quickly a million miles ahead of me. I love my SUP (@lakeshoresup), its sturdy, fast, and friggin gorgeous but when I was alone paddling, I got scared. Ha! I was actually trying so damn hard to catch up, but it was like chasing the speed of light... Impossible. Then finally we made it to this little inlet where the water was calm, we could chill out, chat and have fun. We just floated along, enjoying each other's company, taking pictures and getting sun burned. Even though most of the time we are joking at my expense, it's that time that made everything worth it!
When it was time to go back, Dan taught me a few new strokes and I started to feel more confident. He was still miles ahead, but I could focus on my body position instead of the dead trees I was paddling over. Fear is a funny thing, and I'm so appreciative of my ability to stand beside it. What a fun day! God I love being out there. Next time, I'm bringing wine!! 📷 @dkcoopertremblant
