Holy Shnikees - 70.3 - I did it! 🎉 The day started at a balmy 40 degrees for a casual 1.2 mile swim. Seriously, Austin?! 😂 The water temp was 68, which felt wonderful, but the catch was getting out of the water and onto the bike leg in frigid temps...
• The swim was beautiful, but there was mist coming off the water and after the first turn sighting was tough because we were heading straight into the sun. T1 was looong. But they had wetsuit strippers, so that was cool! Then it was onto the bike...
• I had zero shame and wore my Patagonia fleece over a 3/4 bike shirt, plus gloves and toe warmers that cover the bike shoes to block the wind. I'm so happy I layered because I didn't get feeling in my feet until mile 35 of the bike, and didn't really start to notice sweat until mile 45. The bike course was rolling hills and the roads were very ROUGH. It felt like my bones were being rattled for the majority of the ride, which was less than pleasant on my elbow and mostly just scary on the downhills. Lots of water bottles were scattered on the course that had popped off of people's bikes. All things considered, it went well. I was tired, relieved, and ready when it was time to run...
• By the time I got to the run portion it was 65 degrees and rising. Felt great the first loop, but I also had lead legs. The run was a 3 loop out and back that consisted of a big uphill, followed by a big downhill, and then some small rollers that went through dirt and cracked concrete. The run was hot, but I hadn't taken in enough nutrition on the bike (I left them in the fridge in the morning 🙄) so I wasn't surprised that I wasn't sweating and hadn't used the bathroom since before the race started. I felt comfortable and in my element in the end and just kind of zoned out to let the miles pass...
• The volunteers and aid stations were frequent and incredible - on all 3 legs. I'm so happy and had a blast doing this race. It's not just the post-race endorphins talking, there will definitely be more triathlons in my future! ➖
