These pastries are one of the favorites for Novruz, the holiday of spring cherished in Azerbaijan.
They were served at this weekend's Novruz gala party hosted by the California Azerbaijan Friendship Association (CAFA). These tasty pastries (also called mutekke or qozlu borucuq) resemble the Ashkenazi Jewish pastry called rugelach. The dough is enriched with butter as well as yogurt or sour cream and sometimes egg yolks. They had a walnut filling flavored with cinnamon and a touch of cardamom and were served dusted with powdered sugar.
