As a non-Canadian, it was a privilege to learn about how important Terry Fox is to this country's history. At only 18 he had his leg amputated due to cancer, and while undergoing chemotherapy treatment watched many children younger than he go through the same treatments, often with unsuccessful results. Unable to forget the pain of these children and their families, he decided to run across Canada to raise money for and awareness of this terrible disease, with the ultimate goal of finding a cure. With a prosthetic leg, he ran 5 373km over 143 days, before tragically his cancer returned and forced him into hospital. He passed away less than a year later.
But Terry Fox's fundraising efforts and mission live on. He lived to see $24 million raised for his marathon, with Canadians uniting behind his sheer determination and selflessness. Every year people throughout Canada and the world participate in the Terry Fox Run, and to date, $750 million dollars have been raised in his name. A national hero and true inspiration.
