Bit of a long one, but here goes the sad story of my attempt to help the homeless tonight... #Homeless #HelpTheHomeless #London #RoughSleepers #ITried #Sad
Tonight, after walking my friend to her train, instead of hopping on my tube to make my own way home, I decided to do something nice & I went to Co-Op & Tesco and spent around £12/13 on 10 sandwiches to give to homeless people who might need a bit of help and are more than likely hungry. I walked a route where I have always seen many rough sleepers, I went from Charring Cross, to Leicester Square, through China Town, along Shaftesbury Avenue, back to Piccadilly Circus and then back along the other side of Shaftesbury Avenue to my bus stop. When I said to people I dont have any change, but I do have spare sandwiches, I was told the following by the people I tried to do something nice for... 'Do I look like I want a sandwich love' 'Id rather just have the money' 'Aint you got any cigarettes' 'F**k off' 'Bring something f**king useful next time' 'Does my sign say I need a sandwich' 'How is food going to help me' & 'Cant you read, I need money, not bread' I also got called a Slag & a Bitch.
One person took a sandwich & told me I 'could have selected better flavours' (I wanted to get as many as I could for my money so brought a selection of cheese, ham, ham & cheese, cheese & onion, chicken mayo, and chicken & sweetcorn) One person took a sandwich & threw it down next to him. Only one person said to me 'Thank You sweetheart, I hope you have a lovely evening'
I realise maybe I just walked past the wrong people and that this probably (hopefully) doesnt represent the majority of Rough Sleepers & Homeless people in London, but I dont understand how people who seemingly have nothing can not only turn down a kind gesture, but also be so rude and hurtful to the person who is trying to be nice to them out of all the people who just walk past them as if they arent there.
Needless to say, I started out feeling like I was going to be doing a nice thing, but ended up feeling stupid & got on my bus back to Victoria feeling quite sad, and am still carrying a bag containing 7 sandwiches. Maybe one day Ill try again.
