💥Starting Strength for Scapular Dysfunction💥

Many reasons can lead to a scenario where someone has terrible winging/flaring of the scapula with over recruitment of certain muscles and under recruitment of others. Maybe there was a preceding injury, or maybe they’ve never been taught how to properly lift and have strengthened poor patterns over the years.
.
The path of HOW you got there will help lead you down the path of HOW to recover from your specific condition. However, here are some pretty simple Scapular training sequences to play with if you’ve seen issues like this before.
.
🔑Laying face down, begin to move the arm out to different angles (from 9-12 on a clock face for my left arm). This will allow us to see the progression from Scapular retraction when the arm is at 9, to Scapular upward rotation as you reach 11-12 overhead.
.
🔑Once the person is successfully able to get the correct recruitment strategies here, you can move to banded variations as seen in the video.
.
🔑 From here, you can up the ante with some prone Reactive stability challenges. In this example I’m dropping and trying to catch a 1.5lb ball.
.
🔑 Lastly, you can further this progression by getting up from the table and working your way through similar progressions until you’re able to add in the different skills of rowing (Scapular retraction), external rotation (Scapular depression), to pressing (upward rotation). .

Here, we basically have a missing infraspinatus. That's your largest - and likely most important - rotator cuff muscle. It's secondary to a suprascapular cyst. I usually see 1-2 of these in professional pitchers each offseason, and while most are usually completely asymptomatic, it has a dramatic impact on the way we approach their offseason arm care programs. We want to them to REMAIN pain-free.

This exercise strengthens many components of the rotator cuff. The subscapularis, Infraspinatus and Teres minor help stabilize while the Latissimus Dorsi, Deltoid and Triceps help pull the weight into position. 🔴

1️⃣ Hang weight at side of bench, draw weight backward.
2️⃣ Pull back and keep dumbbell close to body.
3️⃣ At the top/end range draw/adduct the dumbbell in toward hip. Then return to start.

💰Prone “Shoulder North/West” with slider. The stabilizing shoulder complex is the stationary arm🏋️‍♀️.

💰Standing “North/East” with physioball 🎈, more challenging than it looks. Key is to slightly lean (i.e. weight-bear) into the wall. This helps increase the stability demands of the upper extremity ‼️

QUICK SHOULDER WARM UP FOR LIFTING🏋️‍♂️‼️

Here is a quick shoulder warm up sequence I use with my CrossFit athletes🏋️‍♀️ before a workout.

1️⃣- W’s
2️⃣- 3 way band pull aparts
3️⃣- overhead flexion with tension .
🎯The emphasis here is on the rotator cuff, as well as the other scapular muscles 💪 including the lower trapezius and serratus anterior.
.
🚀We’re addressing several key movements here like shoulder external rotation, as well as scapular protraction/retraction and upward rotation which all help prevent injuries such as impingement and rotator cuff/biceps tendinitis.

External rotations - the standard for prepping for upper body workouts. Roll a towel up under your arm to align the shoulder joint better and take your time.

Twice as long on the eccentric (returning) part of the movement. High rep, low weight. Shoulders for days. 😎

You will see from me previous post I had talked about the proximal force couple, this picture involves the distal force couple. The distal force couple involves the rotator cuff. The supraspinatus, subscapularis, teres minor and infraspinatus pull obliquely to reduce the upward pull of the deltoid. If any of the rotator cuff become weak there is an increased upward pull from the deltoid which will narrow the subacromial space due to elevation of the humeral head. If the medial rotators of the shoulder become overactive, like latissimus dorsi and pectorals, subscapularis becomes weak. If the lateral rotators such as teres major and posterior deltoid become dominant the teres minor and infraspinatus become weak. Arthroscopic photos of the rotator cuff repair in this right shoulder (see prior post for tear photos). The scope enters the posterior (back of the) shoulder and the picture is oriented as if the patient were standing. The photos show the completed repair, with the sutures tied and cut. The sutures themselves are secured it to the rotator cuff footprint on the humeral head with the use of plastic screw-in anchors.

👍🏼 BENCH COMEBACK 👎🏼 After yesterday’s success with deadlifts I tested how bench was.. it was weak af. 90KG 5x5 after all these little set backs and injuries.
Even trained some arms very light and some dips and rear delts.
My arms blew up after 3x15 lol

🇬🇧 🇮🇹 🇬🇧 SHOULDERS: injury prevention and rehab

The shoulder is the most mobile joint of the human body, but its anatomical complexity results in a reduced stability of the whole region relying only on the balancing of several muscles.

Repeated workouts/stresses with heavy weights, especially when associated with bad form and unbalanced training programs, tend to produce imbalances between the various stabilization muscle groups that, in the long run, can cause pain and lead to injuries.

In the sports field you often hear about the rotator cuff, a district made up of 4 muscles (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis) that are essential in order to maintain the stability of the shoulder.

Today we see some exercises, for stretching and strengthening, useful to prevent injuries to the rotator cuff.
The aim is to achieve an adequate strength balance between the shoulder muscle groups focusing on the external rotation muscles and the rear delts that are usually less developed than the frontal region.

Last but not last, let's remember that effective prevention always starts with proper exercise form (and load selection), for example when bench pressing remember to retract and depress the shoulder blades.

I've been working with Ash for 4 years now and rebuilding and strengthening through her shoulder. She's a hairdresser and continually finds that her arm goes numb during when it is used too much, either during a workout or a hair cut. We've done an awesome job building her strength and mobility back up and now it was time to release some of the tension built up in that rotator cuff. Look at the improvement of her external rotation! She even did a hair cut later that day and didn't feel any pain or numbness.
This is a common complaint from my one sided workers - hair dressers, hygienists, servers, etc. There is a total imbalance created in their upper body which ultimately trickles down and they find they also have lower back and hip discomfort or pain. Creating the stability and releasing the tension built up in these areas can establish harmony in the joints and body.

Great workout in this am for #turkeyday. Here I have posted my go too burnout shoulder exercises to finish up my workout. Internal/External rotations aren’t just a shoulder rehabilitation exercises to repair #labrum or #rotatorcuff injuries but a great move too build strong anterior/posterior #deltoids. Combining that with Arnold press curl hits every #muscle and #ligament building a strong #foundation in the #shoulder complex.
