Just like January, February offers a lot of interesting days with old traditions. Some of them marks the ritual of spring.
2/2 is a day that offer a lot of celebration. The Orthodox Church marks the day when Maria & Joseph brought Jesus to St Simeon who propheised that Jesus would become the Messiah. Out on the country side old women through rituals sacrifice a rooster to welcome the spring. The rooster symbolize the sun & fertility. Its an old slavic tradition.
On the 1/2 or 14/2 depending on the Julian or Gregorian calendar Trifon Zarezan is being celebrated. St Trifon was the patron of wine & fertility. On these days an Orthodox priest bless the grape bush and the farmer prunes their wine plants through rituals. Its rituals for a good harvest & fertility.
18/2 1873 the Bulgarian national hero was hanged by the Ottomans. So on this very day the Bulgarians are honoring their hero who brought freedom to Bulgaria.
As the Great Lent start the Bulgarians mark the day of St Todor who was the patron of horses. Many horse races are being arranged all over Bulgaria on this day.
And of course the festive rituals of kukeri continues on different places of Bulgaria in February to scare away the evil winter spirits.
