What filled @nikhardeman cup last night? This: My youngest had martial arts class tonight. Upon arriving to class just in the nick of time, I realized I did not have my phone with me. This was troubling, because class. What was I supposed to do for 45 min while my child ran around kicking and jumping and throwing himself onto mats?? I can usually crank out a few emails, pay a bill or two, and watch my kid enough to let him know I was paying attention. .
I'm not proud to say, I had a small internal moment of panic. Even still, I settled in for class and all I could really do was watch. And that is what #filledmycup tonight. With less distraction, I paid attention. I saw how hard my son was working to perfect his forward roll. I saw that when the teacher thinks he is goofing off, he is really just nervous to ask for help. He and I are going to work on that now. I saw that sometimes, when he feels competitive, he is tempted to cut corners. We are going to work on that also. Tonight I was reminded that just watching what was happening in class was not the same as really seeing my kid. My forgetfulness tonight was an important reminder that if I want to truly see my kids, removing distraction matters.
