Rookie overview- Jessie Bates III
For players drafted in round 1-4, I’m going to give the chance of starting since they’re locks to make the team. Round 5-7 I’ll do chances of making roster, and if it’s over 80% I’ll also do a chance of starting
Chance of starting: 75%
Jessie Bates is a true free safety, something the Bengals have lacked the past 2 years. He’s a center fielder with great ball skills. His tackling needs some work. He is a very intelligent football player. One of the smartest prospects in the draft. Him falling to 54 was a perfect scenario for the Bengals.
A lot of teams have been using more of a 3 safety package, and I expect the Bengals to follow the trend. New defensive coordinator Teryl Austin used a 3 safety package in Detroit at times. Looks like he’s gonna bring that into Cincinnati. Shawn Williams will likely play a nickel linebacker, since he’s aggressive and pretty solid with the run. Iloka will be in more of the strong safety role, as he’s a much better strong safety rather then free safety. And obviously Bates being the true free safety he is, will play free safety.
Now, Bengals won’t be in the 3 safety package every play. We will still see a lot of 4-3s and traditional nickel packages. In those scenarios, we will likely see Iloka and Williams at safety. That is good AND bad. Even in those packages, a true free safety is needed very much. Having 2 strong safeties out there just has not worked for us. However, we don’t wanna rush Bates into the starting role. I think as the season goes on, we slowly see more of Bates in those packages. Jessie Bates chance of starting(75%) is a little lower since he might not play in those 4-3s and traditional nickels as much early on.
