Take a bow
The Orchestra plays for nearly all performances given by The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet on the main stage of the Royal Opera House, under Music Directors Antonio Pappano (The Royal Opera) and Koen Kessels (The Royal Ballet). The orchestra pit, of an adjustable height, can accommodate up to 90 players at a time, but the instruments needed vary from score to score. Look closely in the pit and you might see unusual instruments: the score for The Exterminating Angel features the eerie ondes martenot, an electronic instrument played either by pressing keys on the keyboard, or by sliding a metal ring up and down in front of the keys – all while pressing the controls with the left hand. This photo, however, was taken during a rehearsal for Die Meistersinger, where the orchestra, while large, is not entirely unconventional.
