24 Apr 2018. Aussie aperture
📖 “Aperture: an opening, hole, or gap; a space through which light passes in an optical or photographic instrument, especially the variable opening by which light passes through a camera”. For this photo, I chose the "aperture" in the canopy of Australian eucalypt trees to let through the light of the Milky Way, so that the open "aperture" of my camera could record that light for you to see. 🌌
As well as the central band and core region of the Milky Way, this photo captured the light from three planets. Jupiter can be seen peeking out from the leaves at the top-left of the shot. Saturn is on the left side of the “v” shape in the trees at the bottom, and Mars, which is hidden by the trees below that “v”, but which managed to shine its light through the smallest of gaps there. An irony of this shot is that it I took it at a location that’s about a 20-minute drive from my home, towards the very end of a four-hour road trip to find clear and dark skies.

Planetary Nebula PK 164 +31.1
.
”He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.”
.
Is this what will become of our Sun? Quite possibly. The bubble of expanding gas pictured above is the planetary nebula PK 164 +31.1, the remnants of the atmosphere of a Sun-like star expelled as its supply of fusion-able core hydrogen became depleted. Visible near the center of the nebula is what remains of the core itself -- a blue-hot white dwarf star. This particularly photogenic planetary nebula shows intricate shells of gas likely expelled at different times toward the end the star's demise, and whose structure is not fully understood. This deep image of PK 164 +31.1 from the Calar Alto Observatory in Spain shows many other stars from our own Milky Way Galaxy as well as several galaxies far in the distance. PK 164 +31, also known as Jones-Emberson 1, lies about 1,600 light years away toward the constellation of the Wildcat (Lynx). Due to its faintness (magnitude 17) and low surface brightness, the object is only visible with a good-sized telescope. Although the expanding nebula will fade away over the next few thousand years, the central white dwarf may well survive for billions of years -- to when our universe may be a very different place.

Surely one of the most unforgettable rockets ever, Saturn V rolls out toward its launch pad 39A, at Cape Canaveral, before the Apollo 14 mission.
The next photo has been taken on July 1st, 1969, right before the launch of Apollo 11.
If you haven’t seen the liftoff, I invite you to swipe twice to have an original close-up video of July 16th’ launch, the same year. 🚀

New rocket coming soon.
Illustration and following statement by @orbital_atk. “We are thrilled to announce the name of our new large-class rocket: . This all-American rocket, designed for the U.S. Air Force’s Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) program, will have a capacity of up to 10,100 kg to Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) and up to 7,800 kg to Geostationary Equatorial Orbit (GEO). As work continues on OmegA, we are also excited to announce that we have selected Aerojet Rockeydyne’s RL10C engine as the vehicle’s upper stage propulsion system.” - Orbital ATK

The integrated flux nebula is a huge collection of intergalactic dust. It is named such because it is illuminated by the light flux of the entire Milky Way galaxy (hence integrated). So naturally this means it is really faint. This image is kind of the bare minimum integration I found acceptable to show a little bit of the IFN coming out. For some reason the weather never allows me to put in multiple night into this object from dark skies. So for now I remain at 9hrs integration for this target, and it’ll probably stay that way since the more interesting nebulas in Cepheus are back :—-). In other news one person had to drop out of the workshop due to scheduling so we have a last minute opening. Let me know what you think!

The Ufo Galaxy (NGC 5775) is a spiral galaxy with a high star formation rate, about 85 million light-years away in the Virgo Cluster. Astronomers have used the high inclination of this spiral to study the properties of the halo of hot gas that is visible when the galaxy is observed at X-ray wavelengths. The mechanism behind such haloes is unclear, but they are found around spirals that have a high star formation rate, like NGC 5775.

When I Heard the Learned Astronomer
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me,
When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide,
and measure them,
When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with
much applause in the lecture-room,
How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick,
Till rising and gliding out I wander’d off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars.

Happy ! This interacting pair of galaxies is called Arp 142! Made up of a disrupted spiral galaxy (NGC 2936) and an elliptical, egg-shaped galaxy (NGC 2937), this duo is located about 326 million light years away in the southern constellation Hydra. #WorldPenguinDay!

Drew @drewrichardsuk has been researching EARS, the East Anglian Rocketry Society. I investigated EARS after being disheartened by the inaccessible, high-end nature of space exploration. I wanted to see what the every-mans space travel looked like. Without knowing what to expect I stumbled across a fantastic community of rocketeers who worked together for the benefit of the group. There were unwritten rules of sharing, guiding and respect and this is something I want to share.

Our sun lives all on its own, with only planets, moons, asteroids, and comets to keep it company. The nearest star is over four light years away. Interestingly, most stars are not alone. Most exists in systems of two or more stars, called multiple star systems. Many stars exist in vast groups called star clusters, some of which can contain millions of stars.

Star clusters come in two types: globular and open clusters. Both these clusters are completely opposite of each other. Open clusters are young, some less than a hundred million years old. These clusters are home to younger, more massive blue stars. Open clusters also tend to not house too many stars. Some may only have a few hundred. Due to the smaller concentration of stars, the mutual gravitational pull of all these stars is not enough to keep the cluster together forever. Over time, the stars will drift apart.

A globular cluster is completely different. Globular clusters tend to be quite old, some older than our galaxy itself. They are also home to older, less massive red stars. Globular clusters are also have a very large number of stars, sometimes they can contain millions of individual stars. The mutual of gravity of so many stars is enough to keep the cluster intact for billions of years.
