ben watt / north marine drive (1983)

Cherry Red もネオアコもたいして聴いてないんですがこちらは長年の定番です。#なかなかええ感じ

👶🏼 Born on this day; Kevin Ayers (1944-2013)... 🚨 Ayers spent much of his childhood raised in Malaya following his parents divorce 💔 The tropical atmosphere 🏝🍹and unpressured lifestyle would have a big impact on his musical output and overall outlook on life 💁🏼‍♂️🍷He’d return to Canterbury in England around his teens ✈️ joining a local group called Wilde Flowers, featuring a certain Robert Wyatt. As the band evolved (in to what would become Caravan) Ayers and Wyatt went on to form Soft Machine, sharing bills with Pink Floyd 🎸🎹🥁 at the (John Hopkins and Joe Boyd founded) UFO club 🛸 on London’s Tottenham Court Road, circa ‘67... Soft Machine would then support Jimi Hendrix 👋🏾 on his second U.S. tour 🎸after-which a weary Ayers 🚬😑🍻 would sell his white Fender Jazz Bass to Noel Redding 👋🏻 retreating to Ibiza to recuperate 🏝😴 He’d return in ‘69 with his first solo LP, ‘Joy Of A Toy’ 😁🐸 #kevinayers #softmachine #robertwyatt #pinkfloyd #joeboyd #joyofatoy #jimihendrix #vinyl #vinyljunkie #vinylcollection #nowplaying #nowspinning #vinylgram #vinylcommunity #vinylpost #recordcollector

Born on the 16 of August 1944 Kevin Ayers, an English singer-songwriter who was a major influential force in the English psychedelic movement. Ayers was a founding member of the pioneering psychedelic band Soft Machine.

16 августа 1944 года родился Кевин Эйерс — британский вокалист, гитарист, басист, композитор, автор текстов, один из основателей группы Soft Machine.

Most people consider Soft Machine’s “Third” album to be either their finest hour or the beginning of the end. There are a few weirdos (like my friend Brian) that think their best work came after this, but they’re the minority. By 1970, Soft Machine had abandoned the progressive and psychedelic music they were playing and shifted focus on jazz. I assume this was inspired by Miles Davis’ “Bitches Brew”, but it could be that lots of musicians in the 60s were just heading in that direction on their own. “Third” consists of four side-long tracks, each notably different from each other. The first song, “Facelift” is a dark and brooding slow-burner of a song that is confusing at first and gives no indication of what’s to come. It’s murky cacophony of free jazz eventually gives way to structure, tension and aggression, with harsh, jarring organ and overdriven horns that practically rip through the speakers. “Slightly All The Time” is more subdued/melodic and kind of sounds like what Embryo were doing early in their career. They were no doubt influenced by Soft Machine, or at least drew from the same influences. “Moon In June” stands out in that it’s the only track with vocals. I read somewhere it was the last Soft Machine to feature vocals. It used to be my favorite track on the album, but I’ve come to realize there aren’t any best parts and that the album works best as a whole, provided you have 76 minutes to enjoy it as a single piece. “Out-Bloody-Rageous” closes this out with swirling tape loops and two defined segments that mix jazz with some of their psychedelic and Canterbury roots. It sounds like four song fragments smooshed together, but given how strange the rest of the album is, it doesn’t sound forced. If it weren’t for the muffled production, this would be a perfect album. I’m not sure I enjoy it more than “Volume Two”, but I don’t consider it a disappointment. The band changed styles so often, it doesn’t make sense to compare it to other parts of their discography. It’s a fantastic album, overflowing with moodiness and musicianship and I can’t recommend it enough. #softmachine #softmachinethird #jazz #psychedelicrock #progressiverock #robertwyatt

Robert Wyatt. Rock Bottom. Virgin Records. 1974. Original UK Pressing. Produced by Nick Mason(Pink Floyd). If ever an album was an accurate reflection of a current mood or state of being; it isn’t simply that it’s filled with tales of heartbreak and loss. But this complex record reaches much deeper into the tapestry of human emotion then just the negative. . Wyatt equally concerned with the topics of love and the renewal of life. Inspired by his relationship with Alfreda Benge, whom he married just before the albums release. Most of the songs have a tradition song structure. But they all have delicate impressionistic aspects that unify the entire record. Completely unique and much closer to jazz then rock. I’ve often heard “Progressive” rock used as a description. And I suppose that fits. But this isn’t Yes or...god help me, ELP or any of that bloated arena rock. This is a beautiful, ornate work of an artist developing and blossoming before our eyes. This is music that demands your time. It unfolds slowly...opening the doors to new and beautiful world, if we can just....slow down. And open our minds and hearts. #robertwyatt #recordplayer #lps #audioporn #music #vinyligclub #vinyllove #vinylcommunity #vinylcollector #vinylcollectionpost #recordoftheday #albumoftheday #vinyloftheday #vinyladdict #vinyljunkie #vinyligclub #nowspinningonvinyl #igvinylcollectors #dustyfingers #recordaddict #huntvinyl

Great album for a rainy day! Pensive, a bit overcast, but somehow nonetheless irresistible. I especially love Elton Dean's work here. Listening to "Slightly All the Time" gives my flashes of Coltrane, Zappa, Pink Floyd, and maybe even a dash of Phillip Glass?!?! Does anyone agree? Who (else) do you here echoing in the hallowed halls of this seminal album?
