Courtyard at Capitoline Museums, Capitoline Hill. Rome. Cy Twombly photographed with his sketchbook by his friend Robert Rauschenberg in 1952. ‘Cy +Relics’ depicts the entranced artist in Rome a decade and a half before his iconic 1967 Horst portrait with his wife, Tatiana. Cy was already obsessed with classical Rome and Greece...and here he’s clearly engaged with this right hand fragment of Emperor Constantine, whose massive stone head, kneecap and femur are nearby. The Capitoline Museums (1471) are among my favorites...sculptures by Bernini, paintings by Caravaggio, antique jewelry, and ideals of the classical world and mythology in white marble and gold. #cytwombly #cytwomblyretrospectivecentregeorgespompidouparis #romanantiquities #robertrauschenberg #robertrauschenbergfoundation #classicalrome #romansculpture

#throwbackthursday to our Spring 2018 Workshop, The Robert Rauschenberg Oral History Project: An Oral and Art History Mash-up with OHMA Co-Director Mary Marshall Clark and OHMA alum Sara Sinclair. The project was a collaboration between Columbia’s INCITE/CCOHR offices and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. The two discussed the challenges and benefits of collaborative oral history work, re-telling a man’s life through art and narrative, their research, and their strategies for managing an oral history project of its size. Robert Rauschenberg.
Earth Day poster, 1970. (Most of us still care 🌳🌎😢)
.
.
In response to a massive oil spill off the coast of Southern California in 1969, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson initiated the idea of the first annual Earth Day on April 22, 1970. Soliciting support from Democratic and Republican leaders, Earth Day was conceived as a “national teach-in” to bring public awareness to the threat of global air and water pollution. What began as a grass-roots movement, with twenty million Americans participating, is now recognized as the launch of the environmental movement and observed in nearly 200 countries around the world.
Robert Rauschenberg designed the first Earth Day poster to benefit the American Environment Foundation in Washington, D.C., and it was published in an edition of 10,300 by Castelli Graphics, New York. Using the bald eagle as the dominant image, the artist symbolically placed the United States at the center of a global problem. Muted and muddy tones depicting environmental decay surround the national bird: polluted cities, contaminated waters, junkyards littered with debris, landscapes scarred by highways and deforestation, and the gorilla, another endangered animal. The safekeeping of the environment and the notion of individual responsibility for the welfare of life on earth was a longstanding concern of Rauschenberg, and this notion would inform his art and activism throughout his life. The poster designed for the inaugural Earth Day was one of many he would create to raise funds for the myriad social causes that were important to him.

Robert Rauschenberg: Thirty-Four Illustrations for Dante’s Inferno. MOMA. 2017.
Between 1958 and 1960, Robert Rauschenberg produced a series of 34 drawings, one for each Canto, or section, of Dante’s poem The Inferno (1308–1321). Together they are a virtual encyclopedia of modern-day imagery, made by transferring photographic reproductions from magazines or newspapers onto the drawing surface. “I think a picture is more like the real world when it’s made out of the real world,” Rauschenberg said. With additional imagery in pencil, crayon, pastel and collage, the drawings reflect Rauschenberg’s desire to infiltrate his art with the scenes and sounds of the surrounding world, a radical departure from the more transcendent ambitions of Abstract Expressionism.

Published in conjunction with the first major retrospective on Rauschenberg’s career since the artist’s death in 2008, this book presents the complete set of 34 drawings, with an introduction by curator Leah Dickerman and newly commissioned poetry from Kevin Young and Robin Coste Lewis, each reflecting on a selection of drawings and their corresponding Cantos.
