Newbrook is currently a hamlet of just over 90 people, located about 108 km NE of Edmonton. Originally settled by Polish and Ukrainian immigrants, it once had a dozen residences, three general stores, four heavy-machinery shops, an elementary school, public library, and a twelve-room hotel with one bathroom.
Currently a motel, post office, a general store, and a retirement home provide some amenity. Until 2002 one could still order a Sputnik Burger at the Sputnik Diner.
Only the fanciful street signs, and the disused observatory, hint at the community’s brush with fame – being the place where the first photo of #Sputnik in orbit was taken in North America – during the so called Space Age.
