"Chasing the Light" is the winning masterpiece of national costume designed by Prapakas Angsusingha (HOOK's by Prapakas). The lavish traditional-cum-modern Thai culture will be presented at the costume showcase in the upcoming Miss Universe 2017.
The inspiration of this national costume is from our Thai folklore of 'Lightning and Thunder' which is characterized by two main mythical personnages: "Mekhala", the guardian goddess of the ocean who owns a crystal ball, and "Ramasura", the giant demon who holds a magic axe.
It is believed that all phenomenon of thunder, flashes and strokes of lightening occur because of the power of the Mekhala (the god of lightening)’s magic crystal ball and Ramasura (the god of thunder)’s magic axe as the story tells.
The beauty of both Mekhala and her crystal charmed Ramasura. So he chased her around but never catched Mekhala. When he could not catch Mekhala, he threw his axe to Mekhala but it never hit her because Mekhala used her magic crystal to flash so it made Ramasura temporarily blind. Mekhala could finally escape from him.
Surprisingly, the main idea from this national costume is that Maria Poonlertlarp will not represent Mekhala but Ramasura holding the virtual Mekhala puppet instead since the designer would like to convey the message that she is chasing the light of the crystal ball (miss universe crown) in the upcoming pageant. However, unlike the real Ramasura, Maria will hopefully catch the crystal ball and the light of the universe crown is not so bright that makes her blind or miss what she wishes for.
