Defending the sacred is more than protecting the land and the water--it is protecting the lives of our people. Our men, women, and children of all nations, tribes, and cultural blends face a combination of old and new challenges. YOU are sacred, your ancestors are sacred, and we will defend our legacy together. #RisingHearts #HeartsAboveTheGround

Who is Michele Pfeifer?

Michele has always been & always will be a ranch girl. Growing up on a ranch with horses, cattle, siblings and copious amounts of hard work led to the creation of Michele's drive and relentless work ethic. From gluing herself to the foaling monitor and delivering a client's foal at midnight to meticulously inspecting stalls to make sure they are cleaned correctly, Michele takes a hands on approach to the care of all the animals in her keeping.

We fight to protect the next seven generations. We fight to protect this lil hoksila. PC: @alliehoo βœŠπŸ½πŸ–€

Our existence is our resistance. Our Indigenous bloc was at the front, led by the youth! Everyone marched for something worth fighting and protecting. Our Bloc, marched for #IndigenousRights = #ClimateJustice, #CleanEnergy, & #JobCreation. This is what the resistance looks like, this is what the renewal looks like. More and more people are being a voice and taking action. Enough is enough, the people deserve the best. We will not let this President and Administration attack our rights and endanger our environment. No one cared about the heat. Today was beautiful. Today was empowering. Today was uplifting. Made new friends, reunited with family. Feeling motivated more than ever to continue building the grassroots power. Excited for the social/powwow tonight! To all who traveled, from near and far, safe travels! Lila wopila tanka for coming! Now let's go make this world a better place and ensure our future generations have the best. Much love to you, always and in all ways! βœŠπŸ½πŸŒŽβ™»οΈπŸ’š

Such a great week for Indigenous Peoples and allies, who all came to DC to continue the movement and keep the awareness going of the Indigenous Rights Movement. Change will come from the people. So many strong hearts, so many powerful voices. Honored to be part of it, honored to march with you all. Safe travels to each and every one of you that joined in a week of beautiful, peaceful resistance. Take that home with you, bring it back to your communities. Much love! βœŠπŸ½πŸ–€ #NativeNationsRise #RisingHearts #HeartsAboveTheGround #StandWithStrongHearts #IndigenousRising

WARRIOR WOMAN - Last year I've met and seen many modern indigenous warriors, both men and women and also a lot of two-spirit warriors. I haven't met Stephanie Big-Eagle in person yet; the beautiful woman in the picture. I did see some of her work as a tattoo artist and listened to her powerful words.
To me, this picture captured the spirit of a strong warrior woman alive. I just love to see this, because these young warriors bring hope and knowledge to a brighter future for the next generations to come. She is one of many inspiring indigenous people and we are better off if we would just be open to take a step back, listen and learn.
By the way, I was always clear about tattoos: They are not for me. That was until I saw her newest design! You can check it out on her page (click on the tag). It just matches everything I stand and work for (also with Wielwerk). I'm not sure when or even if it's gonna be placed. Whenever she's somewhere in or near the NL again, she wants to help placing it πŸ˜€

Rising Hearts founder and Director, @nativein_la , uses her federal issued, Tribal Identification card for her flight to South Dakota. While the ID states enrollment, blood quantum, and is identified by numbers and letters, this is a step to exercise and educate our #NativeRights. TSA didn't know about this or had seen one, but now they know! Also, provided them their tsa.gov website, bullet #9 to prove that this is acceptable. We are more than these numbers, despite this being a modern "dog tag" for humans. β€’
β€’
We are beautiful, talented, and compassionate people. So, if you have your ID, use it. We haven't gone anywhere, WE ARE STILL HERE! βœŠπŸ½πŸ–€

ANNOUNCEMENT: Native in DC, will be Native In LA, Los Angeles... here I come! Leaving in a couple weeks! πŸ–€
β€’
β€’
My time here in DC has been incredible. It's been a dream of mine since 8th grade to live here and serve Indian Country as best I can, help advocate and raise awareness of what is happening in our communities. Never would I have expected an opportunity I'd be silly to turn down, present itself to me in such a short timeframe. DC has given me confidence and taught me to speak up. The work, the city, and those I care most about here, have helped shape me into who I am proud to be and have helped me find what I truly am passionate about. My family and everyone back home, have been there for everything and helped raise me to be a strong, proud, lakota winyan. β€’
β€’
The things I thought I'd be doing in DC, I've done, and have done SO MUCH MORE than I ever could've dreamed. I really am beyond blessed to have met so many wonderful hoomans, that have become family, and some, my bestest of friends. When times were tough, tiring, and stressful... DC, my family, and the people in my life were there to lift me up. When times were great, I had those I care about most, to share in these experiences with, because it's never been just me, or about me. This new adventure will be exciting and nerve-wrecking, but I already have an incredible support system in LA and in general, to help make this a fun, smooth transition. It's going to hurt, it won't be goodbye but a "see ya soon. I'm sure I'll cry a lot, to leave my family, my friends, my job, and the advocacy I've committed countless hours to in DC. My new job, I'm very excited for and it falls perfectly align with my passions: violence against women/MMIW and more. I'll still be blogging. Rising Hearts is here to stay (have such a great team of beautiful, passionate souls) and will still be involved, even if from afar, but I couldn't be more excited to embark on this journey to the West Coast. Lila Wopila Tanka to everyone for all the constant support & love I've received. Keep kicking butt and standing up for what's right, my loves. So much love for you all, always and in all ways. βœŠπŸ½πŸ–€

ONE YEAR AGO: I had a dream. After losing my grampy just a month before and only a couple days after I organized my first event to welcome the Standing Rock youth (who ran over 2,000 miles from Cannonball ND to DC), who were raising awareness and opposing the Dakota Access Pipeline, this dream felt real. He helped in this. This dream was like a scene from Harry Potter. We were in Lower Brule and I was trying to scoop water but it kept going away. I panicked, worrying I couldn't get water. And my grandparents were behind me in the distance. Then I woke up, mouth completely dry, unable to swallow, wanting water, and knew I had to go to Standing Rock. Dogs were used on the water protectors. Mace. Things were gradually escalating. My best friend said he'd join. I asked my sister if I could take my nephews and luckily, Omaka joined! This lil hoksila has a big čantΓ© (heart) and powerfully strong voice, for a 7 year old at the time (7.5 actually, he'd correct me). The three of us gathered up supplies/donations and drove 28 hours to Standing Rock. β€’
β€’
We stayed at the Wiča Agli camp/Kul Wičasa camp (my Tribe/family). We dropped off the donations at the main kitchen and got dinner. We weren't on the frontlines, instead, we were part of the Oceti Sakowin Camp life: chopping wood, delivering wood, going from camp to camp listening to the drums and learning songs, basketball clinics at the gym, welcoming the Mayan delegation to camp, and so much more. Seeing the people come together, over 300 tribal nations and allies coming together... THAT WAS THE BEAUTY. That is what's worth fighting for and protecting. Seeing the kiddos run around, laughing, and helping, was the best. Standing Rock changed my life. We came back, ready to continue raising awareness of what was happening and IS happening: the rising indigenous rights movement. So blessed and honored to have met so many frontline warriors. Grateful for their sacrifices they've made and all who stayed at camp. The youth. The grandmas. The women. The veterans. Lila Wopila tanka! Much love, always and in all ways ✊🏽❀️

@Rising_Hearts Coalition held a gathering to honor our missing and murdered #indigenous #sisters in Washington, DC last night. While many of the causes we fight for focus on the future, this issue is (and has been) a quiet crisis for centuries. Despite the pain, we have to stand up and give a voice to those who have been silenced. #MMIW #NoMoreStolenSisters #JusticeForFaith #RisingHearts #HeartsAboveTheGround
