Deberianah Begley, 16, known as 'NuNu' was shot and killed while fleeing gunfire in Nashville, Tennessee on Sunday, October 8, 2017.
The incident happened Sunday night at the James A. Cayce Homes. Witnesses said shots were fired from a group of young men toward another group in the courtyard around 8:20 p.m.
Deberianah was standing outside of her family's apartment when gunfire started. She tried to run for cover but was hit once in the neck, she was a foot away from her front door.
Her mother with tears streaming down her face said that, "my heart is broken to pieces and we'll never be the same. Whoever did this, turn yourself in! You need to be in jail. She was just 16. She didn't deserve this at all." She went on to say, "I was holding my baby in my arms when she died. Taking her last breath. No mother should have to see their daughter die in their arms."...
Deberianah is remembered as a bright, funny, outgoing teenager who loved school.
Police have not made any arrests in her murder. They say they’re trying to identify anyone who was a part of either group engaged in the gunfire that killed her.
This was the second time an innocent teenage girl has been shot and killed this year at the James Cayce Homes. In March, a 19-year-old girl was shot and killed in the crossfire next door to where Deberianah was killed Sunday night.
A vigil was held last night for Deberianah and neighbors, friends and family members mourned her death, while also celebrating her life. They prayed, sang and released balloons in her honor.
Our sympathies are with her loved ones and we pray her killer is found. Rest well Nunu...
