I've had so many people ask me recently what materials I use for props that I decided to make a little tutorial post using my dad's Right Hand of Doom as an example! This is also basically the process I used for the Hobby Horse too.
1) I build the basic shape out if couch foam. I only recently started using this and I love it. It's a little difficult to get used to; I've found that the best way to attach prices together is by hand-sewing with yarn and a big needle, as glue gets absorbed. For this piece I also used some craft foam and insulation foam.
2) I cover it in a layer of plaster bandages (Rigid Wrap) and then a coat of gesso. This covers seams and minor imperfections, and gives it an even surface.
3) flats color base coat of paint. I use acrylics.
4) weathering and in this case, cel shading! For props I usually use watered-down acrylic paint for weathering.
Then I coat it in matte Mod Podge to seal the paint. That's it!
