I had the pleasure and the privilege of staying in this amazing ladies “tea tent” in a tiny temporary transit camp called Debring on the way to Leh. Debring is located on the More Plains, an incredible geological feature some 160km from Leh, at an altitude of nearly 5000m. Every year when the snows hit, the road is closed, and the people in these transit camps pack everything up and move home, only to come back after the spring snow melt to set up again to provide travellers with a place to have a hot meal and to rest their heads. We arrived at her tent, a white canvas structure that looks a bit like a Teepee, at around 7pm, after nearly 13hrs of driving through the Himalayas. The wind was whipping across the plains and both @cwbeardfilms and I were chilled to our core. We quickly hurried inside and before we could even ask there was a hot Chai in our hands. The set up is basic, an area for cooking, a few beds and an outside toilet with a view people would pay thousands for. We passed the evening chatting with some fellow rickshaw runners and enjoying the incredible hospitality and simple but delicious food that was prepared fresh in front of us. The next morning we were awoken by the gentle drone of her Buddhist mantras. We enjoyed one more chai, a bread omelette and then hit the road for the final leg to Leh. No electricity, no wifi, no heating, no television, no running water, but without doubt my favourite night on the entire trip. My gratitude goes to every single person in these camps, who provide us with the facilities while we explore this beautiful place called the Himalayas.
