“Don’t Let Go (Love)” from the incomparable En Vogue is a classic R&B power ballad from one of the greatest girl groups of all time.
The track, produced by Organized Noize and Ivan Matias, was the group’s most commercially successful and the last single to feature Dawn Robinson, who left the group shortly thereafter due to a contract dispute.
While Cindy was and is my sentimental favorite (was crushing on her since Hold On and Yolanda from Juice!) Dawn was definitely their strongest vocalist. It shows as she delivers an impassioned lead vocal over a soul-stirring electric guitar.
The track was featured on the Set It Off soundtrack, and as such the original version of the video features clips of the girls singing interspersed with scenes from the film. This alternate version, which I prefer, features a unique storyline in which Mekhi Phifer’s character individually seduces all 4 members of En Vogue; of course they find out and he gets a comeuppance of sorts, but by then he already got his! The same storyline would be rehashed for “The Boy Is Mine”, in which Brandy and Monica fight over him this time. Come to think of it, he’s hooked up onscreen with Nia Long, Sharon Leal and Beyoncé.🤔. Conclusion: It’s good to be Mekhi Phifer. But I digress.
