If they were yours, you'd have them back by now... #returnthemarbles

In 1816, the Parthenon Marbles were purchased by the British Museum from Lord Elgin, after he removed them from ancient temples at the #Acropolis.

While the English Aristocracy and the British Government acquired them without the Greek people’s consent, the most important thing now is that they be returned to their rightful place in Athens where they can be seen in their full historical context. What about if key parts of the Colosseum were not in Rome or the Pyramids were taken from Egypt?
200 years later, these “Elgin Marbles” are still in Britain. It’s about time they were returned to Greece where they belong. #returnthemarbles #parthenonmarbles #ancientgreece #dimooakleigh

@theacropolismuseum safely houses some of the Parthenon Marbles. The others were purchased / stolen by Lord Elgin and eventually sold to the British Museum.
Would retuning the marbles to their rightful place call into question the legitimacy of other artefacts held in the British Museum?

The replicas of the Caryatids under the hot Athenian sun...five of the original figures have been transferred to the New Acropolis Museum, where, while being perfectly taken care of, they patiently wait the return of their missing sister...#unesco #returnthemarbles #britishmuseum #athens #nikonasia #nikoneurope #Nikon_Hunt #iamnikon #nikon_photography_ #nikonphotographers #nikonartists #nikon #nikonglobal #nyip #adorama #thatsprd #photooftheday #justgoshoot #exploretocreate

The five Caryatides at the Acropolis museum are desperately missing their sister. She deserves to stand with them in her rightful place, NOT be tucked away, alone, in the British museum! 6/16-Last day in Athens. Much love to the Acropolis Museum. I hope you get what is rightfully yours #returnthemarbles

The looting of the Parthenon Marbles. After the triumph over the Persians the Athenians built the most magnificent temple to their deity, Athena. The frieze depicted two processions dedicating their temple. It depicted the triumph of Democracy over Tyranny, of Freemen over slaves, it depicted the March of Freedom. This unique patrimony of Athens, the foundation of Western Civilisation, was systematically vandalised and looted by French, Venetian and especially Lord Elgin, the British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire early in the 19th Century #returnthemarbles

The Acropolis of Athens from the magnificent Acropolis Museum. In 4 subsequent epic battles including the naval battle at Salamis in 480 BC snd the sacafice of "The 300" Spartan allies at the Pass of Thermopylae in central Greece the Athenian Democracy triumphed over the vastly superior forces of Darius and his son Xeres whose forces were largely slave armies from their vassak states. #returnthemarbles
