9:00am on a Thursday in America. Conrad rode in one of those car carts for the first time and still, our laughing, smiles at the few shoppers and attempt to lighten the mood was received with straight, sad, somber faces. The shelves are half empty. Rusk County is is one of the poorest counties in Wisconsin and is miles from good jobs and a decent restaurant. But hey, they can sure play high school sports up here...that's important, right? Actually, it is. It seems that 4H and sports are the great hope for these kids (I digress). Coming here for over 15 years we've seen some wild stuff--a constant reminder that Dane County or our childhood, cushy, Chicago suburbs are not the "real world." .
On the other hand, we stop at a nice gas station and a locally-owned produce and bulk food store and the attitude is positively the opposite at both. So what's different? Outlook? Jobs? Customer service? Age was a big one (very old demo at the grocery store). Available products was a big one too (Gordy's is so behind). I have my own hunch, but I'd love to hear your thoughts... #smalltown #america #retailmarketing
