Throwback from my performance from Freaky Friday! Body paint by @powergoddessinmotion327

"Black people are rarely afforded the opportunity to stabilize following a severed work relationship that was catalyzed by speaking up. Instead, we are faced with judgement, isolation and unfair long periods of unemployment. This truth is a part of the very reason why we promote fear around standing up for ourselves in work spaces. It’s more than the fear of the unknown, it’s the fear of knowing that standing up for ourselves leads to further trauma that jars us into silence when we are in pain or wronged." – @rachaelthelord read more at www.racebaitr.com 🎲

very articulate

The world is ending and y'all are worried about being civil towards the people destroying it? Direct action is our only hope.

We're expected to politely ask our politicians to pass climate change policy, and if they say no we have to respect them and wait 2-4 years to vote. Let's rethink this y'all."]

Swipe
Spice #saidwhatshesaid, and there are all these people more interested in their own version of #respectabilitypolitics, playing out their own fears of losing #privilege if they speak against #oppression and #patriarchy. They have been taught to dance with the ball on their nose and clap so polite society can say good girl and throw them a fish. They have no idea what to do with #Spice. There has been so many people standing on her neck and #stillsherise. Whenever anything complimentary is said about her its a grudgingly granted 'mi haffi seh that was good' 'mi haffi grant her' with how much pain it gives you to have to acknowledge her talent and goodness evident in your whole #demeanour. She then is expected to be #grateful that you #acknowledge that which she is made to work ten times harder to achieve and toe the respectability line because you 'generously' think she has earned her way into #politesociety. She did it on her own back. You granted her no favours. She owes you nothing. She is not performing for your approval. Stay colluding in your own oppression. All this talk about time and place when what you really mean is body and person. Y'all stay turning off her mic and she stay shouting from her throat #suckyuhmuma #imhereforit #speakit #misogynoir #usherhimout #conversationexpired #smurfgang Not to mention the benefit he gets from this publicity for his 'platform'. Miss me with this #outrage...

RP 🌟 Just gonna point out that white people are not the only ones who can appropriate culture. But there's no such thing as appropriating "white culture". #cycleofgenocide #discovery #conquest #assimilation #respectabilitypolitics #goodintentions #oppressor #whitewashing #marginalization #culturalappropriation #identity #dehumanization #exploitation #trauma #stereotypes #corruption #violence #silenceisviolence

Respectability politics and tone policing are often used to gaslight the oppressed. It's a mechanism used to further marginalise folks, rather than addressing the systemic injustices that have caused their anger.
Anger is a natural response to oppression. We do not have to be polite when demanding justice!

I see you Sis...you talk a good game about Black women’s empowerment but really we’re really just enjoying how it makes us feel to punch down on the most marginalized of us. I’m about #rachetfeminism #trapfeminism that makes sure we include an analysis for the most marginalized of us...that we hold space for those that are seen as undesirable. And it’s not about “coddling” behavior that we know is problematic and destructive but understanding that It’s only from a place of love and compassion that we will raise the collective self esteem of Our sisters and I truly believe that we fight for those of us who DON’T want to be seen as respectable. It’s also about recognizing that thenpersonal is political and that if we want Black women to be able to make different choices then we damn sure better be willing to dismantle the system that creates these conditions that encourage these decisions (read it again slowly). We all are ENTITLED to love, quality of life, respect and security. If your empowerment is built on shaming baby mamas, sex workers, low wage workers, women who lack formal education, who don’t “speak well”, etc...ion want it. mood this week: thinking about the politics of taking up space and making messes—and the necessity of doing so?—especially in historically white, monied institutions. (Here, performance documentation from my undergrad thesis at @oberlincollege: Despierta, 2012 with @davohana) #columbiamfa #performanceart #respectabilitypolitics (s/o to @gre.gor.y and @lexvoight for the 📸)

“In Part one, I already spoke about how frustrating it is, to try to get a point across to someone who is so unwilling to see themselves and their views for what they really are: fucked up and deep fried in white supremacy. There should be a High Times award for the best deflector in cannabis: between Nitin Khanna the ex-CEO of Cura Cannabis or Bess Byers’ the two-faced Libertarian, I have no clue who would win. But I will tell you this, if Bess were a man, saying the things she openly does, ya’ll would have already cancelled her. Being a woman doesn’t protect you, from being held accountable for the harm you do to world around you. From Susan Collins to Caroyln Bryant and the 2016 election, white woman have shown they’re just as dangerous and willing to keep the patriarchy alive as their white male counterparts.” -
Part Two coming Sunday. I want to expand on this topic later today, but just know I don’t sympathize with my oppressors, and I think there’s all this pressure to “go high when they go low.” Because what do we really gain from that? Morality? 🙄 Respectability politics are poison and partaking in them will slowly kill your truths and soul.

P.s.s. yes I posted this last night, saw it flop and die in front of my very eyes and delete it, what about it? 😹
