Today while Coco and I were on our hike we saw an off leash dog coming our way. A trail where off leash dogs are not allowed. While this was happening the owner said,”She’s very sweet.” Which is great but my dog is a nervous, sensitive dog. She doesn’t appreciate strange dogs just coming up to her face. That’s also not the correct way to meet a dog. That’s a set up for failure. That’s what leads to dog fights, bites and so many worse things. That’s what leads to dogs being dumped or labeled aggressive. Even if your dog is the sweetest dog on the planet I don’t want my dog meeting an off leash dog. I don’t want another dog we don’t know in my dog’s personal space. I blocked the dog from getting to Coco and explained she’s a nervous dog who would not appreciate that. Coco and I have been working together for months building a stronger bond. I need her to trust that I will always have her back. That she doesn’t need to take care of anything and that I will take care of it for her. Letting a strange dog in her face would only make her lose trust. I share these experiences because education is so important to me. I hope people will learn from my own personal stories. It’s so important to have your dogs on leash. Your dog might be the sweetest dog who loves everyone. My dog just might not be. Please respect other dogs and humans personal space.
