When is it too many battery platforms. Currently I run Milwaukee M12 and M18, Makita, Dewalt and Festool (Ego as well if I count outdoor tools)I recently talked with the Fein rep and If the Starlock is as impressive as he says I might add that, Ryobi has several innovative tools that I am also considering adding to my mix. Then I have heard Cadex is coming out with a cordless 21ga which I will most certainly be adding. On the other hand I have retired 3 platforms from our tools because of upgrades, but not necessarily permanently like the older Makita 12v, Senco and Ridgid. I certainly have entertained the belt sander and the fusion did well by us and you never know if a gen2 might happen. If Bosch released a battery powered Reaxx I would probably invest in that to. Then there’s always the possibility of innovations on other platforms. Currently I am 100% sure my batteries far out weigh the cords they replaced. I am also certain we gained speed for having many of them. However did we lose some time for packing more chargers. Was some of the gained time nothing more than experience and wisdom. No single platform has every tool we need nor does that seem likely to happen with 12v 18v and 60v platforms and in a few years if/when someone breaks through with Magnesium batteries will all the Lithium lines go the way of Nickel Cadmium. .
For us I currently think we need a minimum of 5 platforms and I can easily see going to 8 but it’s definitely becoming harder to keep things organized and with that many chargers. I wish they all got together and agreed on a universal induction charging box. .
