Mussolini checking out defensive positions in the north of Italy, 1944. The turret appears to be the turret of a Panther. Mussolini visited these works as leader of the little-known Republic of Saló, rather than as Duce of the while of Italy.
Today it's 75 years ago that the Republic of Saló was founded. The "Italian Social Republic" - situated in the north of Italy - came to be after Mussolini was ousted in mid-1943, imprisoned at Gran Sasso, freed that September as a result of a daring raid by Otto Skorzeny, and, finally, installed as a puppet of a pro-Nazi government in the part of Italy still in Axis hands. Mussolini thus remained the Duce, but was effectively powerless from then on, having lost over half of his territory, and effectively owing his freedom to Hitler.
