5 years since the scales on Oracle's back were damaged by the fence he was trapped under... They're never going to look like they once did, scales do not regrow back... only to some extent and for snakes; as we know scales do have the ability to regrow 100% with the newly discovered gecko (Geckolepis megalepis) for example, which sheds its scales to escape predators and awaits for them to regrow. They can mostly only repair themselves, the scales need skin tissue to grow on. After damage like that, it took months for the skin to heal and grow back, then a couple months for the scales to start propagating. For the rest of his life these scales will be black-white and will never 100% heal. As you can see with a picture of his shed, what the damaged scales have done is fix themselves up over the long period of time. Instead of forming a normal big scale, they've isolated every tiny bit of each part that sustained damaged to form new tiny scales. Not high for looks but for survivability and as far as repair goes, it's pretty impressive.
