I’ve struggled w/ anxiety for years (fellow introverts w/ an overbooked schedule ya feelin’ me? 🙋🏻‍♀️) which increasingly got worst as my digestion weakened. I was on a mission to not only calm my mind, but also my stomach. Upon researching natural ways to do so, I found the “legs up the wall” method which benefited even more than I was specifically seeking help for.

Practicing legs up the wall w/ slow breathing helps tap into your parasympathetic nervous system response, also known as the “rest & digest” response. The parasympathetic system conserves energy as it slows the heart rate, increases intestinal & gland activity, & relaxes sphincter muscles in the GI tract. In other words, your body begins actively digesting what you’ve eaten as well as healing & repairing itself. This pose is beneficial for those w/ chronic pain, venous disease, menopause, metabolic syndrome, cancer & restless leg syndrome.

I’ve noticed huge restorative differences from practicing this mild inversion - enough for me to include it in my daily routine. I prefer doing it on the floor over the bed for a greater stretch. I started w/ 5 minutes & increased my time each day until I got to 20 minutes. Rolling a towel & placing it underneath your lower back can provide additional back support. If you’re not very flexible, your support should be lower to the ground & further from the wall. Try to get your tailbone as close to the wall as possible for a deeper stretch, w/ out there being discomfort. Throughout the pose, I alternate stretching my arms out, placing them on my heart & putting them to my side. Put on calming music, close your eyes & take deep breaths. This pose has helped me be proactive against emotional, physical & mental breakdowns by being powerful enough to keep stress in check.
