Our most handsome boy, Luca, older brother of Skyler and Zahra, watching the little ones. He is very intrigued by these two fluffballs but yet so sweet with them. Sometimes they will even get a lick from him through the fence. Rocco is also very intrigued but not as sweet as Luca. Rocco is a very dominant and feisty male and will take a bit longer to show his softer side to his new family members.
When our cubs are very small, we are extremely careful not to expose them to any of our immediate animals to avoid possible sicknesses, bad germs or viruses, and we are using alot of sanitizer. But as they grow older (from 3 weeks), we take it easier as they have to be exposed to "safe" germs early and often as this actually strengthens their immune systems in the long term.
We are also aware of our other animals' health status and are comfortable with our overall hygiene protocol. This has always been our method of raising cubs and therefore we never struggle with cats prone to any sicknesses, not even sick cubs. It certainly helps that they come from good genetic lines of strong, big and healthy cheetahs.
Our animals are also not exposed to daily public and constant volunteer interactions which can bring in contagious bacterias and viruses especially ringworm, a fungal investation, (not a real worm). We have to keep a fine balance of protectiveness to ensure the raising of healthy animals, especially because we only breed for release purposes. We cannot afford to release weak and inferior cheetahs, they will in the long run contaminate the stronger wild population and contribute negatively to the already fragile population.
Skyler and Zahra will be microchipped this week, but we will do their DNA profiling later this year, its unnecessary to do this too early as it involves sedation. We are also definitely not selling them, so no hurry to do their DNA profiling now.
