🔊 Shostakovich: Romance from the Gadfly
Performed by Nicola Benedetti @nickybenedettiofficial.
Here's part 2 of Nicky playing on her beautiful 1717 ex Gariel-Stark Stradivarius! Besides the 3rd movt of Scottish Fantasy, the 2nd movt of Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, I absolutely LOVE the lyrical melody of this piece by good ol' Shosty😍
The real question is, what genre of music best represents Shostakovich? Compare his Violin Concerto no.1 to his Jazz Suites to this beautiful piece of music.
Stay tuned for the next post to hear Nicky play another short clip on her Strad, and following that, Ill be posting about her Strad:)
The Gadfly Suite, Op.97 is a suite for orchestra arranged from the composition by Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975) for the 1955 Soviet film The Gadfly, based on the novel of the same name by Ethel Lilian Voynich.
This Suite, known as Op.97a, is a selection of music derived from the film arranged by Soviet composer Levon Atovmian and has been recorded by several orchestras. As of the end of the twentieth century the complete score of the film had still not been recorded in its entirety.
Inspired by Massenet's "Méditation" from Thais, the "Romance" section from the suite, with its beautiful solo violin melody, is known to Western TV audiences as the theme music for the BBC/PBS mini-series: Reilly, Ace of Spies, about Russian adventurer- Sidney Reilly.
