Typically in the UK and the USA, it is estimated that each hospital bed generates at least 5.5kg of waste a day, of which, on average, 20% or 1.1kg will be plastic waste. Plastic waste generally has a low volume to weight ratio and, as a consequence, the 20% plastic content of the hospital waste stream in respect to disposal will be in excess of 40% by volume. Of this waste, 15% will be considered infectious and the cost of this can be 10x greater than handling non-infectious waste. A primary source of this waste is blue wrap polypropylene, the blue wrap used in the medical industry (Hospitals, NHS), a material that is used globally. An average sized hospital will generate approximately 100kg of blue wrap per day, which is currently being disposed of by autoclaving, prior to incineration or landfill. Sterimelt is the answer. The Sterimelt machine applies carefully controlled heat to the blue wrap, converting it into a liquid that flows into a mould cavity to cool and then create a briquette that is dense and sterile. The end block of solidified material has a proven recyclate value and the machine produces one 20kg block of sanitised polypropylene during each cycle, with a volumetric reduction of at least 85%. The machine is simple to operate, does not liberate any harmful gasses or VOC's and there is no significant additional labour cost to run the machine. It is also feasible that a rebate could be offered to the hospital for the material - the removal becomes a revenue stream instead of a cost. The volumetric reduction leads to reduced traffic to the site generating the waste along with pro-rata cost reductions and environmental improvement, effected by reduced traffic movement. On the basis of a machine processing 100kg of material a day, during a typical 5 year lease, we calculate that it could divert a staggering 182.5 tonnes of plastic material away from landfill or incineration. #Sterimelt this photo is of bags packed with different colour polypropylene sheets, hospital gowns and other medical clothing. The material takes up large amounts of space so was originally disposed of by landfill or incineration. This method was expensive for the hospital and also took up landfill space. If the hazardous waste wasn't put into landfill it was sent to incineration which isn't good for the environment either. Now the material is being process through the Sterimelt machine using thermal compaction. This allows the material to be fully sterilised so it's safe to handle and also makes it fully recyclable. It's a #closed loopcycle. A briquette usually weighs between 12-25kg depending on the country's manual handling regulations. The process is simple as its a one button operated machine, which is then able to be left unattended therefore allowing no need for supervision and the staff in charge of set area able to carry out other tasks in the meantime. There are no moving parts in the machine so it's very safe to be left unattended even when in mid cycle. The material produced as a briquette is inert so it can be stored until enough stock is ready to be collected.
