What exactly is a Building Biologist? I went to a workshop where Tatiana from @iamhome_healthyhome spoke about how to turn your house into a HEALTHY HOME. Her passion is it to identify potential environmental health hazards and offer solutions to create a healthier space for you and your family. Our overall health has declined significantly since the introduction of thousands of chemicals. And 75% of our chemical exposure happens at home! Chemicals such as trichloroethylene, ammonia, formaldehyde and benzene are found in paints, furniture, carpets, synthetic fabrics, pesticides, furniture wax, personal care & household cleaning products. Those chemicals are hormone disruptors, neurotoxins and carcinogens and can cause headache, nausea, irritation to eyes, nose and throat, and worse. How to detox and reduce our chemical exposure:
Avoid air fresheners / scented candles. Alternatively diffuse essential oils. Don’t use insecticides and pesticides. “Go green when you clean”: use chemical free cleaning products, or make your own with bicarb soda, vinegar and essential oils. Use high quality vacuum cleaner with HEPA filters. NASA research designed to create a breathable environment for a lunar habitat showed that indoor plants are great for filtering harmful toxins and pollutants from the air, such as Peace Lily, English Ivy, Snake Plant, Fern. Take off your shoes and get rid of clutter to reduce dust. Open your windows regularly to get the air flowing.
Our tap water contains many impurities such as fluoride, chlorine and heavy metals. Heavy metals are neuro toxins and can cause learning and behavioural disorders such as ADHD. Using a bench top water filter or a Reverse Osmosis system will help getting rid of those nasties in your water.
Avoid any electronic items in the bedroom. Hard-wire your computer, laptop & printer, using Ethernet cables. At night turn off your router. Avoid carrying your phone up against your body, set to airplane mode as much as possible, and put on loud-speaker to increase distance from your head.
I’m off now, turning ideas into action! 💡 📱 🖥 🌱 🌿💧
