Look deep into my vacuum tube. Very old 1876 rectifier tube. #vacuumtube #tubeamp #rectifier #gearnerd

this video by youtube user JennaDDDD is of a 750 volt Mercury Arc Rectifier, a glass device that converts AC current to DC current. they were used in old railway systems, streetcars, old buildings with elevators - anywhere an early DC motor would have been installed. This one was in the Melbourne tramway network, and others were still in use in cities like New York till the 1990s, converting modern AC to the old DC. Prior to it's invention in 1902, cities used rotary converters - giant electric AC motors that were mechanically connected to DC generating dynamos. If you drive around old cities, you can sometimes see old ornate buildings next to power stations - they would have housed the rotary converters back then to transfer power to the streetcars. DC can only travel a short distance compared to AC, so they would receive central AC power and convert it to DC to run the trains. DC was preferred to run subways and streetcars because it's easy to control the speed of a DC motor by changing the voltage and current. Mercury Arc rectifiers were also used to charge early electric car batteries at the turn of the century! They work by using mercury vapor (which is conductive) to transfer electricity between a liquid mercury cathode (the pool of liquid at the bottom) and an anode (carbon in the ends of the arms). The hot mercury pool liberates electrons easily, but the graphite anodes do not, thus the electricity only flows in one direction - creating a direct current. The little bobbing pin is the igniter which generates the vapor, and the glowing gas is is the electricity passing through the rectifier. A fan at the bottom keeps it cool. These days they have been replaced by solid state rectifiers - no more than a giant computer chip. Way less exciting than this thing- you can almost feel the juice. Always loved these. I'm no electrical engineer so I hope some people will chime in with more! #glass #electricity #coldcathode #mercuryarcrectifier #glassblowing #dccurrent #rotaryconverter #rectifier #electricalengineering #subway #streetcar #powerstation #tesla #edison #thirdrail #westinghouse #history #neon #cityplanning #science #scientificglass #juice #highvoltage
