The human spine is made up of 5 different regions which are all functionally related. The spine not only houses and protects our central nervous system, but also serves as the origin for a large number of the muscles in our body including all of our postural muscles.
The ideal posture, represented in this diagram as an upright posture where the individual regions are stacked in a way that efficiently distributes the force of gravity and the ground pushing back against us as we move, serves as the neutral point for our musculature.
When your posture deviates from the normal our muscles enter either a stretched or shortened state. In both of these muscular positions the muscle is in a biomechanically weaker position. Over time, this causes the muscles to become overworked and unhappy.
