Evolve - Gremlinz 2
Cincinnati's Evolve embodies everything I've come to expect from Cincinnati the few times I've gone there to skate or rap, which is pretty much just grime. Cincy is a kind of cutty city, sure it has the same soft gentrified side every city has these days, but that's not the side Evolve portrays. He's more on the grimy side. The side where your favorite rappers dress in drag to perform and your favorite break best sounds like it's being banged out on an MPC by the terminator in a metallic suite with a back patch of a crust punk band. Evolve's new album, Fire To The Prisons, released on Realicide Youth Records is a collection of songs from 2011-2016 written everywhere from Portland, to SF, to Cinci, and beyond. The track Gremlinz 2 is a good example of Evolve's kind of industrial sounding beats and with like voice. His voice sounds like one bar he could be putting a curse on you and the other he's spitting some hot lines directly on beat. I'm always surprised when an artist is as left field sounding as Evolve that they still continue to rap in beat. Just like clockwork every measure Evolve rhymes right on the four count of the glitchy snare in his beat that sounds like it could have been lifted from the score of your favorite post apocalyptic film.
