So many books so little time...
.
Currently sitting in a hospital waiting room for my pre op assessment. Surrounded by couples with babies and honestly, it looks miserable AF. Not a single maternal bone in my body 😬
.
Meanwhile on things more book related, todays theme is books I will read eventually.. 😳 So I’ve been wanting and needing to read Strange The Dreamer for AGES now. I even bought myself the fancy edition of the book! But alas, almost a year later and I still haven’t read it 😶
I am the worst. I know.

Published a few short weeks before she died, Helen Dunmore’s final collection of poetry Inside the Wave delicately traces the line between life and death. For Dunmore, who began this contemplative journey after being diagnosed with cancer, to be inside the wave is to be alive “About to topple / About to be whole.” This fragile balance is not only the subject of her verse, but her own personal experience of dying.

Dunmore’s reflections on morality are as surprising as they are moving. At times, her verse is brimming with joy. She revels in moments of solitude and shafts of sunlight: “Who would have thought that pain / And weakness had such gifts / Hidden in their rough hearts?” She recalls memories of her childhood, as well as those of her own children, time stretching out in front of them: “There are hours yet / Thousands, by her reckoning.” She evokes classical mythology to help her navigate the idea of an afterlife, using homeric allusions to find peace in an ordinary, unheroic death.

But the most heart-wrenching compositions are those in which Dunmore writes tenderly of her fate. In the beauty of the ephemeral and it’s predictable embrace. In the final poem of the collection, which was written for her children shortly before she died, Dunmore likens death to a “motherly caress” leaning into it with the comforting knowledge that “We’re nearly there.” This poem, which was added to the collection posthumously, is bravely written as consolation for her family. It was her way of reassuring them in her final moments - and through the power of her poetry, will continue to do so for many more readers to come.

Inside the Wave is Dunmore’s parting gift to the world, to help those suffering from both illness and grief find comfort in death and see the beauty in the everyday.

I'm a total sucker for a good epigraph 😍
.
I started Her Body and Other Parties on my flight back from Costa Rica yesterday and I'm in love so far.
.
The first story is a retelling of my favorite urban legend. The second is an apocalyptic plague story. Carmen Maria Machafo, it's like you wrote this collection just for me!
.
I'm currently reading the infamous SVU story... It's weird and long and beautiful.
.
Fingers crossed that I love the rest of the collection just as much. Have you read it? What was your experience? Anyone want to chat about what they think the green ribbon symbolizes? Tell me your thoughts! #HerBodyandOtherParties #CarmenMariaMachado #Epigraph #CurrentlyReading

Over on the blog today, I'm reviewing 3 New Memoirs that I just can't stop talking about. (link in profile @somethewiser) ⠀

This one is the best book I've read this year, and probably the best memoir I've ever read. I really LOVE this one! ⠀

It's a memoir, but Maggie O'Farrell tells us about her life through 17 essays about death. It's profoundly moving and reflective. I can't say enough good things about this one. ⠀

My favorite essay is the one with the feather - an incredibly beautiful, intimate essay about miscarriage and loss. More on the blog #somethewiserbooks

THIS BOOK!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
💠
There are many great books in the world, but among them there are only a few which can touch you on a different level, which can smash your ideas about life. The Purple Hibiscus blew me away. It was my first read from Adichie, and I honestly had no expectations or even any idea of what I was getting myself into.
💠
What makes someone a good man? Or a bad one? And based on what information can we determine this? A question which moves me since I can remember. It is amazing how Adichie paints the picture of all these complex characters. This books 'just' tells a story, and does not judge. Purple Hibiscus embraces both sides now, while playing around with the focus sharpening different edges and colors in every chapter. How can someone be a beloved civil hero and a manic abusive father/husband at the same time? Easily actually. It happens more often than we would like to acknowledge, but still, it makes you uncomfortable.
This books is all about opposites and extremes merging into a whole, and that what makes Adichie's writing so strong. 💠
I finished it in no time, but closing the cover didn't mean I could let go of the story or the characters. It is a book which crawls under your skin. A must read. Go read it now!

Now reading #Homegoing by #YaaGyasi - a sweeping story that takes place over six centuries, that touches upon everything it seems, colonization and the building of nations on the backs of slaves, epic in scope but also intimate.
How does one write something like this?

🌟🌟🌟 Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

This book has been everywhere but somehow I had managed to avoid reading too much about it and went in blind only knowing what the blurb had told me and that the book dealt with the theme of loneliness.
For the first 100 pages or so Eleanor annoyed me. I thought her characterisation was overdone and I just found her frustrating but then my ice heart melted and she made me laugh. I found I was rooting for her.
This book didn't blow me away nor did I think it was the most original thing I've ever read but I did find it charming and endearing. Eleanor and Raymond, while no Elizabeth and Mr Darcy, are just everyday, relatable heroes. This book isn't a new favourite or one that's going to be enjoyed by generations of readers but it reminds us to be kind and thoughtful and a little bit more understanding and who can really moan about that?

Ever since I backed Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls on Kickstarter, I’ve become hooked on these illustrated books profiling women from history. This one has an interesting twist - it links the women together to demonstrate how all of these women weren’t just isolated greats, many of them knew and supported each other ❤️
