Hello lovelies and welcome to my second #mentalhealthmonday post (a beautiful tag created by the one and only @wherebookscollide 💖💗)! As I already said in my first post two weeks ago, I wanted to talk a bit more about Richelle’s Vampire Academy and Bloodlines series. In VA one of the main characters battles depression and self-harm, and in Bloodlines one character is battling bipolar disorder and the other eating disorder (I won’t say who, ’cause ya know: 😱 SPOILERS! 😱😅). Richelle puts those issues front and central, and her representation is accurate and very relatable in the way it is described – you can understand what the characters are going through, even if you never faced those issues yourself. 💕💕
The other thing I wanted to talk about is how you can actually see mental health issues being woven into the fantasy aspect of the story. In VA/Bloodlines Moroi (alive, mortal vampires) can manipulate one of the elements – Water, Fire, Air, Earth or Spirit. Users of Water, Fire, Air and Earth are drawing their powers from each element. 💧🔥🌬🌍 But Spirit users, on the other hand, are drawing their powers from their own essence. That is of course both mentally and physically exhausting. I think this is, in a way, an interesting metaphor for mental health – people who struggle with mental health issues will often literally and figuratively drain themselves; it’s a never ending circle.
So, once again, I believe that Richelle Mead is a really great author when it comes to topics like that – her writing on mental health issues is honest and realistic, without being embellished or glorifying the problems. If you are interested in these topics or if you’re struggling yourself, I think you’d find her work really useful and relatable (even if those are fantasy novels, mental health issues also play an important role in her stories 💕). And of course, always feel free to DM me – either to talk about Richelle’s work (I breathe Bloodlines/VA! 😂💕), your own struggles or whatever you feel like talking about. 💗💖 And don’t forget – You’re Not Alone and Always Keep Fighting. 💕🙏🤗
