"Don't Forget the Struggle, Don't Forget the Streets" (1987)
. . .
The unexpected young death of #Raybeez 20 years ago (1997) was the buzz on the scene when I started coming around seriously that year. It was extra meaningful at such a time to be getting into the classic #NYHC of #Warzone. Finally, all these years later, @revelationrecords has allowed us to stop digging for our old Another Planet CDs and crossing our fingers for an affordable vinyl copy of this essential record. And what better label to do it than the one that, as a young second-generation New York startup in 1987, was the first to release Warzone on record? It's tough to believe, looking back, that this was their comeback - by this time they had already come and gone as an early New York band, leaving behind only a farewell 7" on Rev that in no way predicts the awesome power of this throttling record. A true bastion of the #hardcorepunk spirit, who embraced the entirety of the scene across its aisles, Raybeez's passionate integrity and streetwise realizations set the tone for this celebratory missive against the culture industry, affirming the uncooptable value of hardcore punk as a living art and social world. It's an absolutely perfect document of what makes hardcore great and such an inspiration. Fittingly, it's tough, heavy, punk, and positive all at once - such was the integrative ethos of these OGs, who were joining with the new kids of the late '80s to revitalize the music and the scene. Drawing the strings of its history together and empowering it to speak anew, hardcore came roaring into a new era with this LP. Desert island core; it's got at least two personal anthems - "Crazy But Not Insane" and "In the Mirror" - that inspire me as much today as they did when I was 15.

BONUS SHOT: According to the "Lower East Side" EP liner notes, Ray was living in Inwood around the time, right around the corner from my place. I took a shot of his old building while on a walk yesterday.
