Mamee Express Cup Tom Yam Flavor (Malaysia)

The noodles are regular wheat flour noodles with a good flavor and texture. Despite providing only a tom yum flavored seasoning oil and not actual tom yum paste, the broth turned out quite ok. It was a classic tom yum broth which had the sweet, spicy and lime-sour flavors.

Overall we give the Mamee Express Cup Tom Yam Flavor a score of 3 chilis and 3 stars. The only thing we’re missing here is a garnish pack with which it could have scored an additional star.

Nongshim Oriental Style Noodle Shrimp Flavor (South Korea)

The wheat flour noodles are the classic thick Korean ramyun noodles that are chewy. The broth is a lightly spicy (2 chilis) shrimp flavored one with a light hint of sweetness. The shrimp flavor in this instance is that of dried shrimp. Readers from Malaysia and Singapore will recognize the shrimp flavor as similar to the dried shrimp roll snacks that are commonly served during festive occasions.

The serving of dried garnish was quite substantial and it consisted of dried shrimp, seaweed, fish cake and a single large square of another type of fishcake. Overall we give the Nongshim Oriental Style Noodle Shrimp Flavor a score of 3.5 stars. It’s definitely a pretty solid addition to the pantry.

Sau Tao Non-Fried Instant Noodles Abalone & Chicken Flavor (China)

Unlike regular wheat flour instant ramen noodles, the noodles here are non-fried. The texture of the noodles is similar to the fried ones that we are used to, however the taste takes some getting used to. The lack of a frying process makes the noodles taste somewhat artificial and lacking in the familar flavors that we associate with instant noodles.

On the other hand, the broth was actually quite good. It was a clear chicken-flavored broth that had just the right balance of saltiness and oiliness. Sau Tao was also quite generous with the serving of dried cabbage, chives and corn in the garnish pack.

Overall we give the Sau Tao Non-Fried Instant Noodles Abalone & Chicken Flavor a score of 2 stars. The non-fried instant noodles really hurt their score here. We could conceivable score it 1.5 to 2 stars higher if it had used regular fried instant noodles.

Maggi Letup Goreng Kari Berasap (Malaysia)

The noodles are regular wheat flour instant noodles that had a decent texture and flavor. The sauce though was not terribly spicy despite the fiery sounding name, scoring just a modest 2.5 chilis. The flavor was a mix of curry and chili powder. Overall it was quite dry despite the presence of seasoning oil. The dryness was not helped at all by the thick soy paste which was not only hard to squeeze out, but also hard to coat the noodles with.

We give the Maggi Letup Goreng Kari Berasap a final score of 2.5 stars.

Paldo Lobster Flavor King Noodle (South Korea)

Korean ramyun which have a chewier texture due to their slightly thicker diameter. The broth here is a lightly spicy (2.5 chilis) and sour broth with a shellfish bisque flavor. We had expected the lobster flavor to taste artificial but this one actually tasted pretty decent. The seaweed and kamaboko (fishcake slices) garnish added a good seafood flavor to complement the noodles overall.

We give the Paldo Lobster Flavor King Noodle a final score of 3.5 stars.

Wei Dan Shuang Xiang Pao Beef Noodle (Taiwan)

The noodle here are flat and broad wheat flour noodles. They are similar to regular instant noodles, except for the shape. Due to the shape, they end up having a chewier texture which makes for a more filling meal. Another great thing is these noodles did not get soggy even if you were to leave them in the hot water for much longer than the recommended 3 minutes.

The broth is a hearty and pleasantly mild-spicy (1.5 chilis) beef broth. They managed to just the right amount of beef tallow flavor in the seasoning paste without using too much fats and oil. This makes eating the double serving of noodles a much easier task.

Overall we are quite pleased with the Wei Dan Shuang Xiang Pao Beef Noodle and we give it a final score of 3.5 stars. It could have done much better if Wei Dan had included some vegetable or meat garnish.

Ottogi Spicy Rice Cake Tteokbokki Noodle (South Korea)

The wheat flour noodles were regular instant ramen-style noodles that rehydrated well and kept a good texture and flavor. Initially, we were worried that 4  minutes would not be enough time to rehydrate the tteokbokki rice cake pellets as they looked quite dense. However, they turned out just right. They had the characteristic chewy and stickiness of Korean rice cakes.

The sauce itself is not for the faint of heart, scoring a solid 4 chilis. Those who enjoy the ultra spicy Korean noodles will find this easy to handle. But for the rest of us, do keep a tall glass of milk nearby to douse some flames. Underneath all that heat though, you can taste some sweet soy sauce flavor.

Overall we give the Ottogi Spicy Rice Cake Tteokbokki Noodle a score of 3 stars. This could conceivably be a 4 to 4.5 star mass market hit product if they dialed down the spiciness a couple of notches and added a garnish packing consisting of dried vegetables and fishcake.

Acecook Oh! Ricey Pho Ga Chicken Flavor (Vietnam)

The instant pho noodles are made from rice flour and had a nice soft texture that you would expect from pho. The broth is a very hearty and clear chicken broth. Acecook added just the right amount of seasoning oil to bring out the essence and flavor of chicken. When steaming hot, it smells just like a pot of homemade chicken soup.

The garnish consisted of dried spring onion and wheat protein which added a nice flavor and complementary texture to the noodles. Overall, we give the Acecook Oh! Ricey Pho Ga Chicken Flavor a score of zero chilis and 4 stars.

Samyang Kimchi Song Song Ramen Cup (South Korea)

The wheat flour noodle is the classic Korean ramyun that’s thick and chewy. It’s especially good as a dry noodle in this instance and went very well with the sauce. The sauce is surprisingly not as spicy as its deep red color and Samyang’s reputation would suggest, scoring a relatively safe 3 chilis. It’s a thick, sweet and spicy sauce and we could taste the red pepper flavor in it with a light hint of soy sauce.

The garnish consisted of dried kimchi flakes which added a good crunchy, sweet and spicy zest to the noodles. Overall we give the Samyang Kimchi Song Song Ramen Cup a final score of 3.5 stars.
