From middle school to college, you've become like family. From poetry to modeling to just killing shit simply 🙌🏽, you've grown into a dope ass individual. Cut from the same cloth 🇳🇬, often mistaken for relatives: Proud to be your sis. Stay up & stay bold. ✊🏾 Happy birthday & of course many more to come.

🇿🇦 ZANELE MUHOLI
.
.

Zanele Muholi is a visual activist focused on increasing the visibility of the African queer and trans community. Her work serves as a record for future generations of the journey that queer and trans persons have had to travel. She primarily photographs individuals in the moment to place emphasis to the wholeness of each subject. .
.

Muholi's work has faced heavy criticism and resistance from fellow citizens. In August of 2009, Minister of Arts and Agriculture, Lulu Xingwana, walked out of an exhibition of Muholi's work saying it was "immoral, offensive, and against nation-building."
In response, Muholi said, "It's paralyzing. I expected people to think before they act, and to ask questions. I wanted to create dialogue." #QueerAfricans #TheRevolutionIsQueer #BlackLoveIsQueerLove #WeBeenHere #WeStillHere #QueerSouthAfrica #QueerTheMotherland #megamelanin

🇳🇬 ROTIMI FANI-KAYODE
. "I make my pictures homosexual on purpose." - Rotimi Fani-Kayode .
.
.

We celebrate the life and talent of Rotimi Fani-Kayode. He was born in 1955 to a wealthy Yoruba family. He was forced to flee his native Nigeria to Brighton, England at the age of 11, as a refugee to escape the Biafran War. Fani-Kayode went on to study fine arts and economics at Georgetown University in Washington DC. There he met Robert Mapplethorpe, together they flourished on photography. His photography was, he wrote, "a weapon, if I am to resist attacks on my integrity and, indeed, my existence on my own terms." .
.
.
Steven Nelson in Transcendence in the Photographs of Rotimi Fani-Kayode: "To experience exile - be it cultural, familiar, or sexual - is often to experience an existence that is constituted by a loss of wholeness, one is defined by its fragmentary nature. To experience exile is to retain, a faith in homecoming." #FearlessArt #heroes #QueerAfricans #AfricanHistory #LiveOnYourOwnTerms #SelfDefined #DareToTry #UnapologeticQueerAfricans #QueerTheContinent #QueerTheMotherland

Seeing yet another round of "#homosexuality is unafrican" hate make its way through these internet streets. 😒
As #queerafricans, it can be really hard trying to come into, accept, and understand our own #queerness. Especially so when, for some of us of the #diaspora, we're simultaneously undergoing the same process for our heritages and cultural #roots. Having to do both, while enduring lies that say we have to choose between one or the other - #queer or #African - only adds to the wounds we need healing from.
To be queer is not to be un-African. To be queer, for me, is actually to be more in tune with my African-ness. What do y'all think?

"We have all these limits on our identities, from being queer, to being immigrants, to being black but despite these things, there are limitless ways for us to express our identities. Yes, there are limits to our identities but despite these limits we live limitless lives." .

I met Mikael Chukwuma Owunna last summer as a participant in his bio-photography project- Limit(less) Africans. Mikael wants to make the invisible visible and share stories that are normally not share and or accepted.
Mikael had a short stay in Sweden where he photographed five queer people of African descent in Stockholm and Malmö. Mikael wants to come back to Europe and help tell more stories.
He has launched a fundraising campaign to help finance for another trip and tell more stories. Help him by visiting his Kickstarter campaign and donating whatever is possible for you. Every bit of contribution makes a difference.
More information on the Limit(less) Africans project can be found by searching Mikael's name, the project's name and on Mikael's tumblr.
