“There Will Always Be A Small Time” - Corin Raymond “I play here every Thursday in this bar / And its last call for day price / Sign says this is paradise / And that’s exactly where we are”
Have you ever walked by a bar at night—one you maybe didn't notice during the day because it was so quiet and unassuming—and found it lit up and spilling music out into the street?
Some of my favourite nights have been spent inside places like these; bars with small stages in the corner, tiny jazz clubs, or pubs with rooms in the back unnoticed until you heard music bleeding from a door near the washroom.
Those stages are graced by musicians making fantastic music and loving every moment up there. Sometimes it’s a small crowd, and you’re lucky enough to enjoy an almost-private show. And sometimes it’s elbow to elbow, and the energy in the room is something you wish you could bottle.
If you’re looking for something to do pretty much any night of the week, find one of these stages, pull up a bar stool and have a listen.
You never know who might be up there: a familiar musician revisiting the place they started, a group of old pros jamming for the fun of it, or your next favourite band playing in your new favourite haunt.
Thanks @daveborins for reminding me of this awesome song about one of my very favourite places!
