Day 10: One of my students asked what style of yoga I teach. While I am Hatha/Vinyasa trained, my style also incorporates functional movement, fascia release, rehabilitation techniques and whatever the students needs are that I’m working with. I have a diverse sports and dance background that helps inform the framework of knowledge I use; I’m also an avid neuroscience and anatomy enthusiast, the more I learn the more intricate the movement practice is I teach. One day I may have a quantitative name for how and what I teach, but for now I call it Spinal Conditioning or Brain Balancing Yoga. ——————————————
This is a glimpse of something that may happen in a class, the slower you do this the better: The only part of you that is moving is the bent knee, hold the rest of the body in a plank position, glutes and abdominals engaged for stability. Mindful of knee pain - hold the shape as a stretch if that happens. The less you lean back, the easier it is. Doing this away from the door with the heel still lifted is more challenging - you can go back further and it activates your stabilizer muscles more.

TIGHT QUADRICEPS can effect posture and gait, and if left unchecked may lead to back pain and an increased likelihood of 🔥 injury or pain 🔥 at the hip or knee.

Vital for walking 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️, running🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️, jumping 🤾‍♂️🤾‍♀️and squatting 🏋️‍♀️🏋️‍♂️ the four quadriceps work to extend the shin at the knee via the patella tendon. Furthermore, one of the four muscles, rectus femoris, attaches to the ilium and is involved in hip flexion. This action is essential for swinging the leg forward as you move into the next step when walking or running.

Here's why regular SELF MASSAGE 👐 is worth including in your preparation for your preferred activity!

When quadriceps muscles are overworked💢😢 they can become tight and feel inelastic, which can result undue tension placed on the muscle tendon attachments and consequently malalignment of the kneecap. An example of where this is the case is with a condition called, 'Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome'. This can be quite painful and is often accompanied by scratching, grinding sensation in the knee. This complaint can be exacerbated by squatting at the gym, using the stairs, running or by sitting for prolonged periods. If early symptoms are left untreated full recovery can take up to 6 months.

A further problem from overly tight quads is a higher potential for muscular strain! This injury can take upto 6 weeks to overcome with appropriate rehab.
So if you are prone to quad tightness and suffer with knee or hip discomfort or wish to avoid injury you might seriously want to think about using this technique - 'QUADRICEPS SELF MASSAGE STR'
