Zhen Jie Zhang has been denied bail on charges of kidnapping, torture, extortion, assault and ransom, after he allegedly kidnapped a 12 year old boy
In a case that rocked the Gold Coast to it’s very core, a 12 year old boy has been kidnapped in a scene reminiscent of a bad movie. The car pulled up next to the boy, a hood was thrown over his head and he was dragged into a car which then sped off over state lines.
He was bound, gagged and bundled into the back seat of a car while on his way home from his Mudgeeraba school, then driven from the Gold Coast down to Grafton nearly 200kms away the Friday before last.
The boy walked past a dark-coloured SUV allegedly containing Mr Zhang 53, and a second man, who grabbed the boy and forced him into the vehicle. Once inside, the court heard, the abductors allegedly placed a bag over the boy’s head and bound and gagged him.
Mr Zhang was allegedly in the car when the boy was located. Police arrested him and extradited him from NSW to the Gold Coast on Monday. The boy was reunited with his family over the weekend, but did not attend Somerset College Christian day school on Monday.
Police will allege Mr Zhang had fallen out with the boy’s family over “substantial” personal loans which prompted an alleged extortion attempt. Queensland police have refused to comment on media reports the second man allegedly in the car when the boy was abducted is being sought overseas. Although they are not saying what happened to the second man in relation to this case either.
As always if anyone knows this family please let them know we at FACAA would love to help him heal from his ordeal with our Phoenix survivor’s program. We have some incredible schools in the Gold Coast area and we know our program would do him and his non offending family the world of good.
Mr Zhang, an Australian citizen who has elderly parents in China, was considered a flight risk and denied bail by Magistrate Joan White. He has been remanded in custody and his case will reappear in court on June 5.
Magistrate Joan White did the right thing, she simply could not let him out otherwise he would have fled like the 2nd man in this case has allegedly done.
