About 8 years ago I got to meet my hero/celebrity freebie/inspiration/and general punk rock em-effing icon Henry Rollins for the first time. He has long been an inspiration of mine, and someone I admire. Getting to meet him person was incredible – he was exactly who you think he is. He is smart, gracious, funny, and he takes so much time to interact with his fans – the man is busy and not even much of a people person – but if you take the time to meet him, he makes sure it’s a quality meeting. He sincerely appreciates his fans and understands you pay your dues if you want to pay your rent, as the saying goes. It was incredible to realize he’s The Real Deal. There’s a reason I’ve been a fan since I was 12. When I met him and got a photo with him, I said, “Would you pretend like you love me for the photo?” and he laughed and replied, “Who’s pretending? I DO love you!” and a bear hug ensued and it was EVERYTHING. Favorite photo ever. Done. Amazing. Fast forward a few years, and Rollins shows up at a trade show where one of my besties is working. He’s filming a show. She winds up interviewed and on the show, and gets to meet Rollins. She tells him, “My girlfriend is your biggest fan EVER,” and showed him the photo of us together. He said, “Let’s fuck with her.” They recreated the photo and texted it to me. It was hilarious – Henry made fun of me – somehow my photo of me with Henry increased in coolness. Fast forward to last night. I take my hubby to see Henry for the second time this year. Different tour, really wanted to go. When I went to buy tickets there were no general admission tix left – so I bought the VIP tickets, which included a private chat with Rollins in a much smaller group, photos, autograph, blah blah. IT WAS SO WORTH IT. And I capped off the series of fan-girl photos with Henry Rollins last night. I am over the moon, so amused, and so grateful that this guy who I have looked up to for decades is so kind and generous with his time and humor. It’s not every day you find out your celebrity hero is a genuine rock star. Last night’s photo of me, hubby, and Henry; the photo of my bestie and Henry making fun of me; where it all started, me and The Man.
