*THE REALITY OF MY SURROUNDINGS*
About four years ago, when this strip was originally released I was told that the language was controversial. I heard this exclusively from white people, mind you it is arguable that LiP has a predominantly white audience.
You can only take me at my word that this strip represents a rare occasion where I had no intention of being controversial or 'edgy'. As ridiculous as it may seem at times, this comic is based on the reality of my surroundings growing up. These strips in particular are meant to reflect my high school experience. I take no claim to the word, but when I was in high school, "nigga" was used to refer to or address me as often as my own name.
Among other things, LiP is an ongoing tribute to all of the musicians and artists who inspired me. Marcus's dialogue is a tribute to one of my all time favorite rap groups, the Geto Boys.
I am open to discussion and I am always willing to be wrong. Since year one I have never shied away from going full George Lucas and retroactively editing strips. I wouldn't rule out the possibility of someday editing this language out of this strip.
That being said, I am not particularly interested in white people's input here. All others please feel free to express your distaste or support and I will gladly hear you out.
