Less - Andrew Sean Greer 🛩 (featuring the sleepy guest lab)
Arthur Less is a failed novelist about to turn 50. A wedding invitation arrives in the post: an ex-boyfriend of 9 years who is engaged to someone else. Arthur can’t say yes - it would be too awkward; he can’t say no - it would look like defeat. So he begins to accept the invitations on his desk to half-baked literary events around the world.
I was super keen to read this book. It’s been doing the rounds on Bookstagram, and of course won the Pulitzer Prize. I’ve got to say I was a bit disappointed by it - I think all the hype got to me!
My fundamental problem was that I just didn’t connect to the character of Arthur Less. The story is entirely driven by him and his experiences and emotions, so struggling to get invested in Less himself kind of takes away the point of the whole book. I also found it hard to maintain interest in Less’s trip around the world. And those two aspects were pretty much the backbone of the entire book.
It was a well-written and often well-observed book, and was a humorous account of the life of an author and the quirks of attending literary events and winning obscure prizes. I feel like it was this that resonated with the prize committees and the authors who have given it rapturous praise. But to me it just lacked a little heart. .
This is another pick from the wonderful @thestackspod - I’m early this time, and I think it’s a book that will make for an interesting episode! .
