May 27th, 2017 - Over the last couple days I've watched from home a Humpback Whale foraging in North Puget Sound. Today (Memorial Day weekend) seemed like a good day to go out on the boat, have lunch, and maybe get a closer look at these magnificent whales.
Once out on the water it was soon realized that there were actually two humpbacks - bonus! Amazing to get get a glimpse of one, and see the back arch, flukes rise, and then watch the slow motion of them going into a deep dive. After a dive, it was anybody's guess where they would surface; it could be a couple hundred yards away, or quarter to half a mile.. in any direction!
I half jokingly set a photo capture goal: to get a whale fluke high going into a deep dive with Mount Rainier in the background. As time passed this seemed impossible, mostly due to not knowing when or where the whale would surface.
The stars aligned... and I lucked out!! Humpback whale oncoming, with Edmonds, the Ferry, and Mount Rainier in the background.
I will put an album of selected photos of this encounter later tonight. *I always thank my subjects, and wish them well as I leave! #edmonds #pugetsound #edmondsferry #humpbackwhales #centerforwhaleresearch @centerforwhaleresearch #k5spring
