This #doubleportrait depicts two great friends, prominent society darlings so inseparable, they were known as ‘The Twins’.
Baba, whom we shall discuss in this post; was the daughter of French banker Baron Emile d’Erlanger and his wife Catherine de Rochegude. Baba, as a society-girl was well-known for the intense, rich beauty she effortlessly exuded. In November 1923, Baba married Prince Jean-Louis de Faucigny-Lucinge, a descendant of #King Louis IX of #France. Just as her parents before her, Baba and her husband became famous for their decadent #Parisian parties, which had themes such as ‘Souvenir de #Proust’ (a friend of her mother’s) and ‘Le Bal 1900’.
Celebrated portrait and fashion #photographer #CecilBeaton, photographed Baba at the beginning of his career in 1926 and noted that ‘her dark almond-shaped face betrayed a light touch of melancholy’. In this work by Augustus John, Baba wears a plain red dress with a scoop neck. #Edwardian curves in body and fashion were no longer in fashion, giving way to slim, boyish figures in casual, simple dress.
